About us

The Narwhal is an award-winning online magazine that publishes in-depth and investigative journalism about Canada’s natural world.

Think of us as part newsroom, part non-profit and part tech start-up. As a non-profit, reader-funded news organization, our goal isn’t to sell advertising or to please corporate bigwigs — it’s to bring high-quality, evidence-based news and analysis to the surface for all Canadians. We’re leading a revolution in public-interest journalism that is reinvigorating the relationship between readers and the reporters who hustle on their behalf — and we want you to join us.

The storytellers in any society hold tremendous power. At The Narwhal, we recognize that this power represents both a privilege and a responsibility and we aim to use this power for the public good. The Narwhal is working to build an inclusive and equitable team that reflects the communities we serve. We encourage applications from communities traditionally underrepresented in this field.

  • Manage and lead our benefits programs and offerings
  • Assist with all stages of the recruitment and selection process
  • Help build our inclusive culture through activities such as planning retreats, team socials, learning opportunities, celebrations and promoting wellness initiatives and perks
  • Manage and maintain all employment agreements, contracts, employee files and Bamboo
  • Lead all coworking and equipment requests and solutions
  • Assist with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, including training and collaborations across the newsroom

Required skills and experience

  • 3+ years of relevant HR experience
  • Post-secondary education in human resources management, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including thoughtful and intentional listening skills and compassion

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment
  • Confidence with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • The ability to keep sensitive information confidential
  • The ability to resourcefully problem-solve and innovate to find efficiencies
  • Passionate about inclusion, belonging and helping others
  • Committed to reconciliation and decolonization
  • A genuine desire to lift people up

Desired skills (nice to haves)

  • Previous experience successfully managing sensitive, confidential information
  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation
  • Previous experience with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

What we offer

  • Group health benefits after three months
  • Professional development opportunities
  • A flexible workplace with a vibrant, collaborative culture
  • Four weeks’ vacation

Please don’t be discouraged from applying if you do not possess the precise combination of all of the skills, attributes, qualifications and experience listed above.
