The Narwhal is an award-winning online magazine that publishes in-depth and investigative journalism about Canada’s natural world.
We refuse to run advertising on our site or to put up a paywall. It’s a model we’re proud of, but one that only works because of the generous support of readers who give what they can to make our work possible.
The Narwhal is a registered journalism organization, which means Canadian taxpayers can claim a tax credit for their donations in support of our journalism. These donations are treated just like a donation to a Canadian charity.
The most common way for readers to support The Narwhal’s investigative journalism is by becoming a monthly member with a recurring gift of any size. (If you are an existing member, update your credit card here or make changes to your membership by emailing donations@thenarwhal.ca.)
The Narwhal is accepting donations to support our press freedom case against the RCMP.
We also welcome one-time gifts, automatic monthly bank deposits and donations through PayPal. For those who prefer to mail a cheque, our address is:

Other ways to give
Gifts of securities
A gift of securities that have appreciated in value is one of the most tax-effective ways to give. Eligible securities include publicly listed stocks, bonds, mutual fund units or exchange traded funds on approved stock exchanges in Canada and internationally. There is beneficial tax treatment of these gifts because they are exempt from capital gains tax.
Here’s how it works:
- You make a gift of eligible securities directly to The Narwhal.
- You receive a charitable donation receipt for the fair market value of the securities.
- Your gift is exempt from any capital gains tax of the appreciated securities, in most cases.
- The Narwhal will sell the securities and the proceeds will fund our journalism.
To make a securities donation, please contact Don Gordon, Director of Finance: don@thenarwhal.ca.
