Matt Simmons lives and writes, with gratitude and respect, on Wet’suwet’en lands in northwest B.C. and from the coastal lands and waters of the ’Na̱mg̱is, on Tłatła̱skudis (Malcolm Island). He has been reporting for The Narwhal since 2020, with a focus on solutions, Indigenous Rights and rural communities.

His stories lean into complexity and often incorporate visual elements, including his own photojournalism, to help readers make sense of complicated subjects.

His work has been honoured by Amnesty International, the National Newspaper Awards and more, and he was shortlisted for the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Climate Solutions reporting award and Jackman Excellence in Journalism.

Matt is also an accredited trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network and an eternal optimist, who strives to live in a perpetual state of hope.
